Signs in the church When the altars and the images disappeared from the church after the Reformation in 1572, they were replaced by sign featuring Bible texts and the Ten Commandments. It became fashionable to embellish the graves of the wealthier with signs showing the family arms. In the time of the French occupation all these elements had to disappear (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity!) and the same held for the arms on the tombstones. Because there lived quite some famous sea heroes, black signs were made with their names, dates and sometimes complete poems on it. These were sold in 1853 to the local MuseumgoudA which lent them to the church in a prolonged loan. Two have been revealed during the cultural weekend of September 2, the others will follow as soon as possible. The church will be enriched with another curiosity. |
